The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the beginning of a bridge deck replacement project on Smith Street (County Route 656) over Route 440 at the ramp from Smith Street eastbound to Route 9 northbound and Route 440 eastbound in Woodbridge Township, Middlesex County.
On Friday, November 20, NJDOT will close the ramp from Smith Street westbound to Route 9 northbound to begin installing the construction barrier in preparation for removal of the bridge deck. The detour will last approximately three months.
Motorists on Smith Street westbound to Route 9 northbound will continue on Smith Street to the U-turn to Smith Street eastbound to Route 9 northbound. The right lane on Smith Street (CR 656) westbound will also be closed.
“Replacing this bridge deck demonstrates NJDOT’s commitment to improving our transportation infrastructure and the quality of life for residents and motorists,” said Commissioner Stephen Dilts.
During the course of construction operations, NJDOT may conduct single lane closures on Smith Street Mondays to Thursdays from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day, on Fridays from 8 p.m. to Saturdays at 8 a.m., on Saturdays from 8 p.m. to Sundays at 9 a.m., and on Sundays from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Monday mornings.
The $1.9 million project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and will be completed in fall 2010.
