More than 700 compete in senior olympics

More than 700 senior Olympians participated 16 Olympic-style events at during the 2009 New Jersey Senior Olympic Games held Saturday, Sept 12, at venues throughout Woodbridge.

The games kicked off with opening ceremonies held outside the Woodbridge Community Center, where Mayor John E. McCormac welcomed athletes from across the state.

Woodbridge Township Senior Olympians and gold medalists carried the Olympic torch for the opening ceremonies, handing it to Senior Olympian Emma Hendrickson – a 100 year-old Gold Medal winner and Olympic competitor in bowling.

The New Jersey Senior Olympic Games offer senior athletes 50 years of age and older the opportunity to compete for the Gold, Silver and Bronze in 16 competitive events.

The Senior Olympic Games took place at sporting venues throughout Woodbridge Township, including the YMCA at the Community Center, The Club at Woodbridge, Warren Park, and the athletic fields at Woodbridge High School.

The Senior competition is part of the “Mayor’s Wellness Campaign” which encourages Township residents – regardless of age – to engage in a healthy and fit lifestyle. The New Jersey Senior Olympics is part of the National Senior Games Association.
